About This Image

There is a small sign on the wall that indicates "Kiki Chante". Kiki was a favorite photographer subject, particularly of Man Ray and later Brassai, and she lived a rather notorious life. Best known as a popular (and usually nude) artists' model, Kiki was a singer and performer, a painter, a writer, and the central female instigator for the avant-garde demimonde of Paris in the 1920s.For a few years during the 1930s, Alice Prin (aka Kiki) owned the Montparnasse cabaret L'Oasis, which was later renamed "Chez Kiki." Her music hall performances in black hose and garters included crowd-pleasing risqué songs, which were uninhibited, yet inoffensive. This may be an image of her Caberet, or one of the many Paris cabarets that she performed in.
