Photographer's Philadelphia ink stamp on verso. William Rittase (1887-1968) was known for his high quality industrial photography commissioned for advertisements and articles. His birthdate is sometimes shown as 1894, but this is probably incorrect. His industrial photographs were frequently published in Fortune magazine during the 1930s. Lincoln Kristein included Rittase in his 1930 Harvard Society for Contemporary Art exhibition, along with works by Weston, Sheeler, Evan, Bruehl, Bourke-White and others. The exhibition is considered by many to be the genesis of the Museum of Modern Art. Kristein also invited Rittase to contribute to the 1932 exhibition at MoMA entitled "Murals by American Painters and Photographers". Of late Rittase has been recognized as an important American modernist. His photographs of the American railroad industry are some of his finest work
